जिला सिरमौर के संगड़ाह वन परिक्षेत्र के अंतर्गत आने वाले संरक्षित वन क्षेत्र (Reserve Forest) घाटों के जंगलों से दुर्लभ वन संपदा की तस्करी का मामला सामने आया है। वन विभाग की टीम ने गुप्त सूचना के आधार पर कार्रवाई करते हुए संगड़ाह-गत्ताधार मार्ग पर पिऊलीलाणी नामक स्थान पर ‘बिरना’ फर्न (Fern) से लदी एक पिकअप गाड़ी को कब्जे में लिया है।कार्यवाहक आरओ (RO) संगड़ाह सत्य प्रकाश शर्मा और डीएफओ (DFO) रेणुका जी बलदेव राज कंडेटा ने मामले की पुष्टि करते हुए बताया कि वन विभाग की टीम ने पिकअप नंबर HP 08-0220 को तलाशी के लिए रोका था। जांच के दौरान गाड़ी में करीब 1 क्विंटल दुर्लभ फर्न (बिरना) बरामद की गई। वन विभाग ने त्वरित कार्यवाही करते हुए चौरास गांव निवासी पिकअप चालक एवं आरोपी यशपाल से मौके पर ही 30,000 रुपये जुर्माना वसूला। जुर्माना राशि जमा होने के बाद ही पिकअप को रिलीज किया गया।इस सफल कार्यवाही को अंजाम देने वाली टीम में वनकर्मी सत्यपाल, मुकेश, रवि और विक्रांत शामिल रहे। टीम ने पिऊलीलाणी के पास नाका लगाकर इस अवैध खेप को पकड़ने में सफलता हासिल की।

जानकारों के अनुसार, हिमालयी जंगलों में पाई जाने वाली यह ‘बिरना’ फर्न अत्यंत सुंदर और दुर्लभ होती है। दिल्ली, चंडीगढ़ और लुधियाना जैसे बड़े शहरों में फूलों के गुलदस्तों की सजावट के लिए इस फर्न की भारी मांग रहती है, जहां इसे काफी ऊंचे दामों पर बेचा जाता है। सूत्रों की मानें तो क्षेत्र से हरियाणा और पंजाब जाने वाली सब्जी की गाड़ियों के माध्यम से भी चोरी-छिपे इसकी तस्करी की जाती है।उल्लेखनीय है कि क्षेत्र के लोग कई बार सरकार और नेताओं से इस फर्न को बेचने की अनुमति दिलाने की मांग कर चुके हैं, ताकि वे इसे आजीविका का साधन बना सकें। हालांकि, अति दुर्लभ श्रेणी में होने के कारण इसे काटना या बेचना वन अधिकारों (Forest Rights) में शामिल नहीं है और यह पूरी तरह से प्रतिबंधित है।

A case involving the smuggling of rare forest produce has come to light from the forests of Ghaton—a designated Reserve Forest area—located within the Sangrah Forest Range of Sirmour district. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Forest Department intercepted and seized a pickup truck loaded with ‘Birna’ ferns at a spot called Piulilani on the Sangrah-Gattadhar road.Confirming the incident, Acting Range Officer (RO) of Sangrah, Satya Prakash Sharma, and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Renuka Ji, Baldev Raj Kandeta, stated that the Forest Department team had stopped pickup truck number HP 08-0220 for a search. During the inspection, approximately one quintal of the rare fern (Birna) was recovered from the vehicle. Taking swift action, the Forest Department imposed and collected a fine of ₹30,000 on the spot from the pickup driver—and accused—Yashpal, a resident of Chauras village. The pickup truck was released only after the fine amount had been deposited.

The team responsible for executing this successful operation included forest personnel Satypal, Mukesh, Ravi, and Vikrant. The team achieved this success in intercepting the illegal consignment by setting up a checkpoint (naka) near Piulilani.According to experts, the ‘Birna’ fern—found in the Himalayan forests—is exceptionally beautiful and rare. There is a massive demand for this fern in major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Ludhiana, where it is used for decorating floral bouquets and is sold at very high prices. According to sources, the fern is also clandestinely smuggled out of the region via vegetable transport trucks heading towards Haryana and Punjab.It is noteworthy that local residents have repeatedly petitioned the government and political leaders for permission to harvest and sell this fern, seeking to utilize it as a means of livelihood. However, due to its classification as an extremely rare species, cutting or selling it is not included under Forest Rights and is strictly prohibited.
