Fortis Hospital, Mohali has achieved another milestone in the medical field by successfully performing a complex coronary angioplasty on an 80-year-old patient suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The procedure was performed using ultra-low contrast technique with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guidance, which prevented any additional strain on the patient’s kidneys. This state-of-the-art treatment was led by Dr. Sudhanshu Budakoti, Senior Consultant Cardiology at Fortis Hospital, Mohali. The patient had been suffering from kidney disease for a long time and presented with severe chest pain, shortness of breath, and coronary artery disease.

Traditional angioplasty uses a large amount of contrast dye, which can be harmful to the kidneys, but the ultra-low contrast technique has significantly reduced this risk. Dr. Budakoti explained that the IVUS technique allowed for precise visualization of the blood vessel structure, blockages, and stent placement with minimal contrast, making the treatment completely safe and successful. The patient has been discharged from the hospital in a stable condition. He added that advanced imaging techniques like IVUS and OCT are regularly used at Fortis Mohali, enabling better and safer treatment even for high-risk cardiac patients.
